Squirt continues slick relationship with PwC Great Zuurberg Trek

A lengthy and slick relationship between the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek mountain bike race and Squirt Cycling Products will continue to benefit riders in next year’s event.

The company, which is perhaps best known for its wax-based chain lubricant, will again be on duty at the three-day boutique offering starting on May 27.

Danie van Wyk, one of the founders, said they were proud to be associated with the GZT as they shared “a lot of common ground”.

“We have been a proud supporter of the GZT for a number of years and we can truly say that we are impressed with the success of the race, which is ensured by professionalism and wonderful people,” he said.

“As a boutique event, we feel the GZT offers us visibility to a unique audience that would otherwise not be directly exposed to our brand.

“The GZT is also a uniquely South African event, just like our products, so there is a lot in common.”

Van Wyk added that the organisers had created routes that compared with the best in the country and offered riders a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience the remote Eastern Cape wilderness alongside friends.

“My advice – do the race if you can!”

He said the start was exciting, the middle an experience and the end a relief and that, combined, it made for “one heck of a ride”.

“Make sure you appreciate every part of the trails and every aspect of the event so as not to miss out on anything.”

Van Wyk explained that Bikinvention, Squirt’s holding company, had developed a range of products that was in tune with the environment.

“We have a wax chain lubricant with unique properties called Squirt Chain Lube and produce the biodegradable Squirt Bike Cleaner.”

The company also manufactures Barrier Balm, a long-lasting application for skin protection on endurance events, and a sweat removal device called the Sweat Sucker and Slurp. In addition, it has developed an ammonia-free tyre sealant.

GZT’s gourmet waterpoints double as lube stations while participants will also find Squirt Lube and Barrier Balm anti-chafe samples in their race packs.

“This anti-chafe cream may just be your best friend by stage three,” quipped Van Wyk.

He added that protecting natural resources was an important factor in the company’s philosophy and therefore it treated the environment and customer with “equal integrity”.

“All our products are environmentally friendly and biodegradable. We want to be able to enjoy riding in nature, while protecting it at the same time.”

The seventh edition will return to its traditional home at the Zuurberg Mountain Village near Addo, about 70km outside Gqeberha.
