Champs aim to win again in their ‘back yard’

Andrea Shirley and SanMari Woithe have been the only women’s winners of the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek since its inception in 2014. Andrea shares her thoughts on the event as they target a hat-trick of titles.

I’m once again teaming up with my Merrell teammate SanMari, with whom I’ve raced a lot.

We are naturally very excited as we love racing in our ‘back yard’. Our objective this year is to win the women’s category while having as much fun as possible.

Our prep for the event included both on-road and off-road riding and we’ve also incorporated some trail running.

Our partnership works well as we know each other’s strengths and weaknesses, which is imperative in a stage race with such varied course conditions.

Although we both live in Port Elizabeth, we seldom train together due to our busy work and life schedules. Despite that, we seem to have a seamless partnership.

We race as hard as we can and always have as much fun on and off the bikes as possible.

In my opinion, the PwC Great Zuurberg Trek is a top-class mountain bike race. The purpose-built trails, together with the wilderness experience, lend a special flavour to this event.

And, because the field is limited, it gives you the opportunity of getting to know most of the ridscenicers during the course of the three days.

In my experience, the organisers always put in 110%, which is shown in the success of the race.

A huge amount of effort goes into the preparation of the trails, which is one of the aspects that adds to the enjoyment and keeps riders coming back for more.
